Mantra
September 26th, 2009 by Sowmya

A mantra is a sound, syllable, word, or group of words. In sanskrit, the definition for Mantra is that which is capable of “transforming the mind” (mananaat traayate iti mantrah). mantraIn fact, it can be considered as a potent combination of syllables chanted in such a way that they can stir the subliminal mind.

A mantra may or may not have specific meaning and its purpose is to devise a method for accessing and absorbing the cosmic energy.

The magazine Akhandjyoti ran an interesting article titled “The Science of Mantras makes Possible the Impossible” in its 2005 issue, in which it quotes

The methodology of a mantra’s functioning is novel. As the specific phase of its sadhana is completed, it connects the sadhak’s inner consciousness with the specific cosmic energy current or devashakti. But this is one aspect of its function. In its other aspect, it simultaneously makes the sadhak qualified and fit to receive this special power. By mantra – sadhana, certain secret recesses or zones of the sadhak’s interior become activated, and he becomes capable of receiving, bearing and harnessing those subtle energies. Only then the mantra is said to have become siddha (accomplished or mastered).

Mantras can help to calm the mind, give inner peace and help to focus while meditating. Used while meditating, Mantras help to divert the mind from material objects and distractions and help to focus the mind on the divine inside.

Ancient scholars and customs have always laid great emphasis on correct pronunciation of mantras and one could say that this was responsible for the immense transfer of knowledge in ancient India much before paper and writing were invented.

Our site is dedicated to help people learn many popular mantras, slokas and stotras and has links to the following..

Your site is very informative and interesting especially for people like me who had given up on prayers during our youth and rediscovering spirituality in the later part of life. Will be extremely grateful if the stotrams as well as pooja vidhis can be given in Malayalam version also. I do realise it is a tall demand but people like me will be eternally grateful for the efforts.

    Thanks and regards
