Madhurashtakam
Oct 19th, 2009 by Ram

The Madhurastakam (Sanskrit: मधुराष्टकम्, madhurāṣṭakam) is a beautiful Sanskrit composition in devotion of Lord Krishna, composed by the Hindu Bhakti philosopher-poet Sripad Vallabha Acharya who flourished under the patronage of the Vijayanagar King Sri Krishnadevarya in the late fifteenth century.

This hymn was created to lead the devotee to the Path of Grace, which involves a constant love-filled devotion to Krishna by various means including singing (kirtana), remembering (smarana), conceptualizing and beholding (darshana) a lovely image of the deity upon singing of the Madhurastakam, and offering of services (seva). These acts enable the devotee to enter into the divine presence of Sri Krishna and to experience the Lord’s real essence (svarupa) which are in fact, succinctly laid down by the Madhurastakam.

The Madhurastakam deals with the qualities and deeds of Lord Krishna, all of which have been conceptualized as been dipped in madhu, meaning honey or nectar. In the eyes of the devotee, everything that pertains to Lord is sweet and graceful, he being the adhipati -Lord of all sweetness.

The body of the Madhurastakam includes many qualities, attributes and motifs associated with Krishna, including the venu flute, cows, the Yamuna river, gopis, and Krishna’s lila. These have been labeled as ‘sweet’ in the astakam. Hence, Madhurastakam plays an instrumental role in the realization of the Lord.

This mellifluous rendition of the Madhurashtakam is by Vijay Jesudas.

Reiki – An Introduction
Oct 17th, 2009 by Sowmya

Our thanks to Reiki Master Anandhi (Reikiananda) for guest authoring this article on Reiki
———————————————————————————————————–

Health is wealth.“. He who has health, has hope. And he who has hope, has Everything.”

Each of us want to be healthy .. . For a person to be healthy and happy his physical, mental ,emotional and spiritual levels on the whole should be in balance and harmony. Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing technique which brings about a holistic healing of the person.

Reiki works on the physical mental, emotional and spiritual levels of a person (treating both the cause and effect ) thus bringing about a balance in both the body and mind of the person.

Reiki is a Japanese word having two syllables “Rei” and “ki”.pronounced as Ray-Key.
Rei means universal or that which is present everywhere and
ki means the prana shakthi or the life force energy.

Everything in this universe is made up of this energy. This same energy flows through each one of us.Reiki Reiki is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that this unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stressed, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in mid 1800. Reiki is a natural spiritual healing technique..which is unaffected by the Religious beliefs of a person. Anyone who has a willingness can learn Reiki. Just as no qualifications are required for a person to breathe or take in water no qualifications are required to learn Reiki. It is in fact every person’s birthright to have Reiki. Reiki is passed on to the student through a process called Attunement or Initiation by a Reiki master. Attunement is the core of Reiki.

Reiki is not limited to physical or mental healing. Reiki can strengthen the immune systems…improve awareness..improve relationships..remove addictions and fear…empower goals.. enable forgivance…improve memory… provide protection..and so on and so forth.

The health and well being of a person is determined by the prana flowing thru them…Reiki incorporates this prana sakthi / life force from the universe and supplies it to the person healed…the healer just acts as medium!!

Reiki is not a religion, It is spritual in nature. Apart from doing the Hands on healings a Reiki practitioner is expected to follow the five principles or Precepts of Reiki namely..

Just for today..

    I will not be angry
    I will not worry
I will be thankful for everything
I will lead an honest life
I will show love and respect to one and all

These principles when followed in daily life not only make us live in the present but also helps us improve the quality of life.

Suprabhatam (Sanskrit: सुप्रभातम, “auspicious dawn”) is a name given to Sanskrit hymns recited in the morning to awaken the Lord.

Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam consists of four parts: Suprabhatam, Sri Venkatesa Stothram, Prapatti, and Mangalasasanam.

Sri Suktham
Sep 28th, 2009 by Sowmya

Sri Sukta/Sri Suktam, is a vedic hymn from the Rig Veda which is in propitation of Shree or Mahalakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity.

The Sri Suktam assumes specific significance because of Sri Mahalakshmi’s presence on Lord Sri Venkateswara (at Tirumala) or Vishnu’s chest, at the Heart. Lakshmi is the embodiment of Love, from which devotion to God or Bhakti flows from. It is through Love/Bhakti or Lakshmi that the atma or soul is able to reach God or Vishnu.

Sri or Lakshmi is also the personification of the Spiritual energy within us and universe called Kundalini. Also, She embodies the Spiritual World or Vaikunta; the abode of Lakshmi-Narayana or Vishnu, or what would be considered Heaven in Hinduism. She is also the Divine qualities of God and the soul. Lakshmi is God’s superior spiritual feminine energy or the Param Prakriti, which purifies, empowers and uplifts the individual. Hence, She is called the Goddess of Fortune.

Mahishaasura Mardini Stotram
Sep 24th, 2009 by Sowmya

“Mahishaasura Mardhini” means one who killed the Asura called Mahishaasura and refers to the Goddess Durga. The demon was in the form of a buffalo and hence the name Mahishaasura.

The author of these verses is not clearly known but according to some sources it is said to be Ramakrishna Kavi. The verses have great poetry and use various alliterations to describe the divine nature of the Goddess Durga.

Easily classifiable as a tongue twister, these verses are traditionally chanted in South Indian homes during the Navarathri and have been made rendered impressively in the melodious voice of M.S.Subbalakshmi as well as the Bombay sisters. More recent versions include various contemporary artistes including Sudha Raghunathan and S.Sowmya.
